Wow, who knew buying an older home could be so much work?
Last week my boyfriend and I got the keys to our new home. It was built in 1926 and is 1,200 + square feet of refinishing fun! To begin with, we decided to paint every room on the main floor (all walls and ceilings). So we painted the kitchen "Barn Door Red", our bedroom is "Everlasting" (which is code for BRIGHT blue), the living/dining/hallway is "La Fonda Boulder" (which looked more brown on the card and almost has a purplish glow on the walls), the guest room/office is "Flower Power" (soft peach), and the bathroom will be a mix of Everlasting and white (but that is for another week).
After we painted we ripped up ALL the carpet except in the guest room, because the previous owner was a big smoker and the whole house reeked of smoke. I cleaned the carpet in the guest room and Febrezed the hell out of it.
One problem we encountered was the woodwork in our bedroom had been painted first with oil-based paint then water-based, so the paint was just peeling off the woodwork. So Matt and his dad are slowly taking off the paint and stripping it to the wood. Which means I am going nuts since I have not gotten in their to clean or rip up that carpet. I figured we'd be all moved in by Labor Day weekend...think again!
Tonight we get the dining room furniture then tomorrow we pick up the living room furniture. I am hoping by Monday we are mostly moved in, so I can start staying there. It is going to be a beautiful home, but it will be a work in progress for the fall and winter and spring.
The funny thing is it is the exact floor plan of the house I grew up in and the house I used to live in with my roommate. The only thing that is different is it is larger and has a better kitchen layout. Plus I am not having people do the work for me, which means it means in the long run, I will take greater pride in it and will care if I spill or break things.
