Black Hills Vacation Days 1-2

Last Monday, Matthew and I packed up our six-cylinder SUV to embrace the rustic majesty of South Dakota with a toddler, 10-month old, my younger brother and my parents. (Don't worry we took two SUVs....we had so much stuff it would never fit in one!) The boys were troopers for the car ride and my nerves survived the journey despite Graham talking THE ENTIRE TIME and Behrend crying and running a fever. This was our first big trip with both of the boys and it was nice to have the extra help from my family, and overall we had a great time!

Here is what we did on Days 1 and 2...

My Mom is wonderful. She packed enough food to feed an army...or a bunch of hungry Midwesterners-ha! She brought a picnic lunch along and we stopped at the rest area in Chamberlain to eat lunch and view the Mighty Mo. Graham got to ride his motorcycle around and we checked out the visitor's center.

We arrived in Hill City shortly before dinner. We unpacked, the fed the boys then tried to find a pizza place. Turns out it had closed a year before! So the guys headed to Mac's Grub to bring back burgers and sandwiches since it was getting late and we were all tired from a day in the car.

The next morning the everyone, but Behrend and I rode the 1880s train from Hill City to Keystone. Then we had lunch at the house before heading to Mt. Rushmore. Mom and Dad entertained Graham while David, Matthew and I (with Behrend in the Ergo carrier) took the trail to just underneath the President's faces.
