Body After Baby: One Month

DSCN3385

Graham will be one month old on Monday! He's getting bigger and cuter and chubbier. I just love how his cheeks are filling out.  And, the nice part is that mine are getting smaller. :-)

During my pregnancy I gained 30.5 pounds, but continued to remain very active walking almost every day for 1-3 miles depending on the weather and what was going on.  I think staying active helped me stay strong during my long labor and three hours of pushing.

The day after I gave birth I weighed 10 pounds less than when I came into the hospital.   However, my legs and ankles and hands were still very swollen.  My body was hanging onto the extra fluid for some reason and I was told to monitor myself after going home to make sure I did not develop pre-eclampsia (which is possible to do after birth even though it is called "pre").  The first week I was home I wore pajamas and a robe and tried to manage a shower every day.

Then suddenly one week after I was home and taking a bath I looked down and noticed I had ankles! And my legs looked so thin.  I could not believe it, but the water weight was gone.  Then when I took Graham into the doctor for his 10-day check-up I asked the nurse if I could weigh myself and I weighed one pound less than when I got pregnant!

So I went home and tried on my favorite pair of jeans and they fit! I was so excited to be able to button my pants and wear my pre-pregnancy clothes.  It was like discovering a whole new wardrobe.

However, just because my weight is down does not mean my shape is back.  I definitely have some core-ab work to do.  And I have a lovely linea negra down my tummy that I am hoping will fade with the help of some cocoa butter lotion.

But since I am nursing and constantly hungry I have not started a diet or extreme exercise.  I am trying to eat healthy snacks, because it's so easy to just eat sugar, sugar and more sugar. And, once the weather warms up I plan to get back outside and run my regular 2-mile route.
