Road Trip: Texas style

Last week Matthew and I went on another road trip, this time our destination was Grapevine, Texas. We left Wednesday after I got off work and drove to El Dorado, Kansas (on the 335 Turnpike). We stopped at the Super 8 Motel to see if they had any rooms open and I ran inside. There was a sign on the counter that said "We do not rent or sell rooms to local residents of El Dorado." Hmmm.....interesting.
I asked the clerk, "What kinds of industry do you have in town? We noticed lots of lights and smoke stacks on the way into town."
The clerk responded, "Oh you either saw the oil refinery or the prison."
What the hell kind of town did we stop in? And, the clerk at the first motel we stopped at suggested we do not venture far into town, because it would be unsafe at night. Hmmm...perhaps we should have kept driving to Wichita.
However, we survived the night, but we left both of our pillows at the Super 8 Motel!!! I did not realize it until we go to Texas and when I called the motel they had no record of our pillows.
While we were in Grapevine (Dallas area) we did not do a great deal, because it was chilly and rainy. Rain to Texans is like ice to Iowans, however, I don't let it keep me home a lot. On the third day of our trip it was dreary, but not as damp, so we took an hour-long historic trainride from Grapevine to Fort Worth. The train stopped in the Stockyards, so we got out and saw all the little shops and western horse riders.
Sunday we drove 12 hours home. It is always nice to get out of town, but the more I go away, the more I appreciate home. :-)
