Before I begin this tale let's set the scene. It was August of 2000 at Buena Vista University. I had just begun my freshmen year of college and I knew two people on campus. So, what do most freshmen do? They try to make new friends. (I've been told this story, because I do not really remember it.) Evidently, I was waiting outside of my Spanish class when I recognized a girl who lived on my hall (Betsy). I started talking to her and she had no clue who I was. She thought I was some crazy girl from one of her education classes. Fast forward to the end of freshmen year and Betsy and I were the best of BV buds. We roomed together for the next three years in suites living with a variety of semi-crazy people, but our friendship remained strong.
It was during my years at BVU that Betsy and I began to introduce each other to our friends back home. I am not sure who I met first, but I remember Jennifer and Nellie visited a lot and we'd hang out every time I went home to Lincoln with Betsy. Jennifer was at Wesleyan studying music and biology while Nellie was honing her photography skills with on-the-job training. We soon became inseparable and even after college we've stayed in touch. For a short time Jennifer and I lived in the same town and that was so much fun. (Come back Jennifer!)
Staying in touch is not always easy the older and busier one gets and we've had our share of issues crop up in life from moving far away to bad jobs to cancer to depression to boy drama to weddings to babies to graduate school and lots more.
But, the best part of having those issues is knowing that no matter how long of a separation we have, we can pick up where we left off. It also helps that we live within two and a half hours of each other now and can plan regular get togethers.
My new favorite part of my friendship with these lovely ladies is seeing how much they dote on my son. They definitely fit the role of aunt quite well. Let's just hope they do not show him all their wild and crazy ways until he's much older. (Right Betsy and Nellie!?! Jennifer please keep them under control.).
