Friends Every Mom Needs (The Female Ones)

1) Mom(s) in the same boat (Jerilynne and Kristin)

Why you need her: She gets it. She is going through the exact same things that I am at the same time. We can relate to lack of sleep, poopy diapers and two-second showers. Jerilynne is a new friend of mine who happens to be neighbors to my parents, but we have a lot in common and both are class of 2000 graduates! She has two little boys (ages 2 and 4 months) and we try to get together every few weeks for playdates and to catch up. Sometimes we talk about the mom chaos and other times we chat about non-mom related stuff and there is always lunch! Kristin and I met through Junior League and we both got married to our respective husbands 7 days apart and had our first babies 7 months apart! Nowe we have lots of baby stuff in common on top of JL and book club.

2) The No-Kids Pal(s)(Betsy, Nellie, Steph and Jennifer)

Why you need her: These ladies are so great and while they don't mind that I talk about Graham, we can also talk about non-kid related things and do silly stuff like drive through state parks in unathorized vehicles or steal boxers out of dryers. (Those stories are a bit old ladies. I think we need to have some new wild and crazy experiences!) It is also really neat to see how much they love my child and are willing to do anything for him. I know they all will make great moms someday, too! But, in the meantime they keep life fun and I know I need to be reminded to have fun despite lack of sleep!

3) The Been There, Done That Mom (Kellee)

Why you need her: She gets me through my "I don't know what I'm supposed to do next" moments. I have known Kellee for about five years since we are co-workers, but it was not until I had Graham that I realized how great her advice is, especially regarding nursing. Kellee lets me ask the most embarassing of questions and rant about not just mom things, but work, volunteering and pop culture. She is very down to earth and is even willing to trade off babysitting!

4) The I'll Do Anything For You Buddy (Rebecca)

Why you need her: She'll help you with your garage sale, spend hours helping you figure out how to breastfeed, and bring over casseroles when you're dealing with a crisis even when she has four kids of her own to feed! The first week I was home after having Graham I was a mess, because I had no clue what to do with a newborn plus I was a first time mom learning how to nurse a baby. Rebecca dropped off her own 5 week old baby at her mom's house along with her three boys and came over to help me figure out how to pump and she even brought me a salad for lunch! To this day, she still brings me casseroles or homemade burp cloths for no reason. I know I can always count on her to help me out even if it is some new mom advice.

5)The Slightly Glam Girlfriend(s) (Emily, Katie and Kristi)

IMG_0205 Kristi

Why you need her: The best thing that happened to me in high school was the Van Normans moving back to Sioux City, because I got to borrow clothes from my fashionable friend Emily. And, thanks to Emily having a younger sister Katie sometimes I borrowed her clothes....without telling Katie, of course. I remember my freshmen year of college Emily came to visit and brought me a pair of jeans that made my butt look great in exchange for introducing her to college boys. Emily and I also forged our mom's signatures so I could get my ears pierced and she could get a second hole in her ears. We still share clothes and shoes once in a while, but nowadays we each have our own red sweater with birdhouses! And, Kristi and I have been friends for nine years (and co-workers for seven years) and during those nine years I have learned a lot about expressing myself through fashion and taking risks. Kristi is a great one to go shopping with and always willing to talk style or write love letters to boys that work in state parks.

6) The Brutally Honest Pal (Sara)

IMG_5404

Why you need her: I can always count on Sara to tell me what she is thinking, even if I don't agree with her. Sara and I have been friends since we were 15 (Hello Sara(hr) twins!). She and her husband set up Matthew and I plus she helped me pick out Tootsie (....perhaps I should be brutally honest about that decision, just kidding!) We've changed a lot since high school, but Sara is still my sounding post for lots of advice including job related issues and we can always discuss our wonderfully odd husbands.

7)The Wise Owl (Jolene)

DSCN4472

Jolene and I have been friends since our days at the Star newspaper and despite our 44 year age difference we have lots in common. Jolene is my wise owl, because she's worked in every type of media - radio, newspaper, television, magazine, teaching communications - and I love hearing her stories of interviewing Johnny Cash and meeting lots of Presidents and presidential hopefuls.
