"It's a Friday on a Thursday people! It's Time Magazine day, open to page 6."
That is how my favorite history teacher at East High School would begin class most days. Mr. Cal Hansen was a great guy...sometimes a bit off the wall teacher...but he cared about his students. My close group of friends, including Sara D., Jon A., Beau A. and I were often in his classes, because we would sign up together.
I remember when Jon, Sara and I signed up for some bogus history class with him our senior year...and so did all the class of 2000 thugs. That class was very interesting and I remember how Jon would come to school with cold taco salads from his part-time job at Taco John's or cold Chinese food. Then he'd fall asleep in the first 10 minutes, so Sara and I would sit and chit chat. That's also the class where I found my prom date and we learned about the life of Danny Bubaker.
Sometimes we wonder if we were the reason Mr. Hansen decided to retire in 2000. Did we push him over the edge? Hopefully not, because we loved his classes (except Western Civ.-icky!).
I remember we had a going away party for Mr. Hansen at Garfield's. After dinner he and his wife invited all of us back to their house to have pop and hang out. That was in the day when Emily was hot for Andy Baker and Kurt Hulsebus and Sharon Burka were an "item." And, I had the biggest thing for Jacob Wanderscheid. Wow...how things have changed. :-)
The reason why I am thinking back to the Hansen days is because Beau just informed me his mom ran into Mr. Hansen and invited him to an Iowa get together in December. I hope he shows up, because it has been 8 years since we had our last Hansen get together!
