Mighty Mo Flooding: 2011

The Missouri River is flooding - big time. Residents of Dakota Dunes, SD are packing up their houses and possibly making plans to be out for 2 months or more. Levees are being built all along the river, sand bags are sold out at most stores, so people are hosting sand bag parties to fill more. It is insane. The last time the river majorly flooded was 1953.

So, last night, I decided to ride my bike down to the riverfront. It's an easy 4 mile ride there and 4 miles back to my house. Chris Larsen Park is closed to traffic, but I was able to ride my bike along the bike path. I was amazed how many people were down to see the river.

On the way to the river I rode my bike through the Stockyards. This picture (below) is of the old Floyd River chanel. Usually it has a tiny trickle of water....now it's very full.

The Vet's Bridge over the Missouri (below) offers a great view of the flooding.
Scenic Park in South Sioux City, NE is very, very close to the water. I think I'd move my camper away sooner rather than later.

Water is dangerously close to the Anderson Dance Pavillion (below). I hope people with weddings booked there have a back-up location.

The current Floyd Channel (below) is very full. Normally it's not full or near the rocks.

More photos to come as the water levels change.
