Minnesota Day Trip

On Sunday, we ventured to Stillwater, Minn. for a day trip. It was about a 2-hour drive from Nelson to Stillwater, but the weather was gorgeous. No rain for once!
We crossed over from Wisconsin to Stillwater on the bridge. Shortly after we got there, the bridge was raised up for some barges to go underneath. It is raised every hour.

The first thing we did (after parking the car/motorcycle) was to take a trolley ride. We had a great driver/tour guide and he let Bows come with us!

Bows enjoyed sitting on David's lap and looking at all the cool old houses.

We learned the history of the town (it was originally a logging town) and saw how the neat historic parts of town mesh with newer condos and buildings. If you've never been to Stillwater you should think carefully before going in the winter. The hills are super steep!

After the trolley ride we went to Lou's for burgers and malts. We ate on the patio, so Bows could lay down and enjoy the shade.

Then Matt and I toured the old brewery caves. They used to bottle beer and store it in caves below the main street. It was also used as a boat ride and a fallout shelter. Now it's a tourist trap. To get to the caves you go through a restaurant and I would never eat there. It smelled like a damp cave!

Then Matt and I took the motorcycle around town to Pioneer's Park. It was once the site of a huge old house. Now it's a city park with a great view!

We drove back home along the Wisconsin side and saw a drawbridge!

Then we ate dinner outside at the Garden Pub in Pepin, Wis. (For all you Laura Ingalls Wilder fans, she once lived in Pepin.)

Stay tuned for a Buena Vista Park post!
